Stoners have found some seriously creative ways to get their smoke on over the ages. From Pumpkins to Tic Tac containers, where there is a will, there is a way! So, in the spirit of innovation, let’s take a look at some easy ways to make a homemade bong or pipe.

Apple Pipe

This one is a classic and just like your little black dress, it never goes out of style. It’s also super easy to make. To make a pipe out of an apple, simply start with a fresh apple and something with which to carve into it. You’ll start by carving out a bowl at the top of your apple. You’ll want to poke a hole from the top down about halfway through the apple. Once you’ve completed your bowl, you will create the mouthpiece/ carb.

To do this, simply poke a hole into the side of your apple through the bottom of the bowl you’ve created and push through to the other side. This is best done at a 45 degree angle. Now you’ve got your very own apple pipe! The best part about an apple pipe is the flavor, so take your time and enjoy!

Homemade Gravity Bong

For a pipe that not only amps up the fun but conserves your supply, you’ve got to try out a gravity bong. Gravity bongs have the benefit of getting you really baked, really fast with just a small amount of weed! Generally just 2-3 hits will max you out. It's even better if you can get one cheaply by making one yourself. Here is a great way to make a homemade gravity bong. 

Pen Pipe

Now, if you are looking for a fast fix, the pen pipe is the way to go! You’ll need a cheap, clickable pen with a metal tip that can be unscrewed and disassembled. First things first, remove the clickable part from the top of the pen as well as the ink chamber.

Then, unscrew the metal tip and turn it around to insert into the pen pointy side first. This will create a small bowl on this end. Now simply fill your new bowl, light, and inhale from the other end.  Just a few notes for safety here though- never use a plastic tip for the bowl since burning plastic releases toxic fumes and never use a pen pipe more than once since multiple uses can result in leeched chemicals, etc.

Steamroller

Now this homemade pipe is super easy to make and only requires gathering a few items from around the house. You’ll need an empty toilet paper or paper towel roll with a hole cut in the side for a bowl and a bit of foil.

  Simply take a small bit of foil and poke very small holes in it with a tack or pin. Once you’ve made your holes, take the foil and cover the hole in the roll with just enough of an indention to create a bowl for your herb. Once you’ve got your bowl in place, fill it up, light the greens, and enjoy!

Water Bottle Bong

The water bottle bong is another quick, easy solution for the creative stoner. Start with an empty, cleaned plastic bottle and place a small amount of clean water in the bottom of the bottle to weigh it down. Create a small hole just above where the label stops in the side of the bottle. Next, remove the lid to the bottle and replace it with a small piece of foil. Once the foil is in place, poke several small pin-size holes and then fill your new makeshift bowl with herb. Light her up and get your ganja on!

Pumpkin Bong

For Halloween we decided to have a little bit of fun in the studio by making a bong out of a pumpkin. While this might be not be extremely practical for everyday, it could be a fun seasonal tradition.

Starburst Pipe

  You may not be able to have your cake and eat it too, but you can have your candy and smoke it too. This fun, albeit it sticky, pipe will be give you a great high in a pinch. All you need to do is stack, pinch, and mold your candies into the shape of pipe, load your bowl, and toke it up!

DIY Smoking Devices: Rules of the Road

If you are going to MacGuyver your next smoking device, let’s keep these few  guidelines in place to protect your health and create the best high.

• Choose sturdy materials that can hold their shape through the building process and the smoking process.
• Don’t burn out of a plastic bowl since heated plastic creates toxic fumes that can make you very sick.
• If you are using produce, such as a an apple or orange, make sure that it’s ripe and not mushy or bruised. This will make sure it doesn’t fall apart while you are using it.
• Avoid using unnatural adhesives since they can release toxic chemicals when heated.

Whatever method you choose, making your own pipe or bong can be a lot of fun and a great way to practice your engineering skills. You’ll have a great time expressing your creativity and get to enjoy the thrill of building something yourself from scratch.
