A troop of Girl Scouts in Chicago recently sold hundreds of boxes of Girl Scout cookies in just a few short hours. The Girl Scouts decided to locate their table right outside of Dispensary33, a local cannabis dispensary that opened just a few months ago over on Chicago’s North Side.  As dozens of visitors to the marijuana dispensary left the shop, cannabis in hand, the Girl Scout cookies were on prominent display, giving hungry stoners the perfect opportunity to grab a few boxes before heading home to toke up.  Medical cannabis has been legal across the Prairie State since as early as 2013.  Last May, Illinois legalized recreational marijuana, however, cannabis sales didn’t officially begin until January of this year.  Marketing and Outreach Manager for Dispensary33, Abigail Watkins, told the Block Club Chicago in a recent interview, “The cookies they’re selling and our clientele, it’s a great match. As a former Girl Scout, I admire the hustle.” Added Watkins, “People were having fun. Everyone loves Girl Scout cookies. They were undeniably cute. The response was incredibly positive. People were so excited…our customers loved it, our staff loved it.” A Tweet posted by Dispensary 33 (@Dispensary33) said: “Reporting to you live at Dispensary 33. We have Girl Scout cookies!! And not just the cannabis kind…Support your local Girl Scouts with us…(We have very limited flower for all you stoners. First come first serve. Come through while supply lasts).”

Public Relations Manager for the Girl Scouts of Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana told the Chicago Tribune, “Our girls sell from everywhere – outside of movie theaters, grocery stores. And now if they’re selling outside of legal and aboveboard dispensaries, that is A-OK.” This isn’t the first time that a Girl Scout has set up shop outside of a marijuana dispensary.  Back in 2018, an unnamed 9-year old Girl Scout sold over 300 boxes outside of a cannabis dispensary in San Diego.  The Girl Scouts of Colorado initially banned the sale of Girl Scout cookies outside of ‘adult-oriented’ businesses but lifted the ban last year after receiving a large number of requests to allow booths in breweries.  “Many of our breweries, as we all know, are really family-friendly. We received an overwhelming number of requests from girls, from parents and local breweries that wanted to support girls, to allow girls to come into their businesses and set up booths," said Spokesperson and Director of Public Relations for Girl Scouts of Colorado AnneMarie Harper in an interview with KDVR Fox Denver last February. “Once we opened the door to breweries, the rest followed,” said Harper, referring to cannabis dispensaries.
