Illinois became the twentieth state to legalize medical cannabis in 2014 and Chicago is home to the largest number of dispensaries in the state. Both medical and recreational cannabis are available for purchase, however, Illinois does not allow out-of-state cardholders to shop medically. Adults 21 years of age and older can purchase up to 30 grams of cannabis or its equivalent (just slightly over the standard 28-gram ounce). Medical patients are generally allowed to purchase 2.5 ounces every two weeks, but may be allotted more by their doctor.
