Microdosing…You’ve probably heard this word floating around recently, but what exactly is microdosing? Microdosing is the latest and greatest trend in cannabis. Microdosing is the practice of taking tiny, consistent doses of cannabis in order to reap the benefits without the traditional high. Microdosing is not a new concept though. In fact, proponents of LSD and mushrooms have been touting the benefits of microdosing for years. Albert Hofmann, the scientist who created LSD, believed that microdosing was the most important area in the future of psychedelic research and could be used to enhance productivity and treat mental illnesses. So, how does microdosing work exactly and what are the benefits of consuming cannabis in this manner?

Microdosing is achieved by taking precise, micro doses of THC throughout the day, usually between 2.5 and 10 milligrams depending on your tolerance. Everyone’s body and tolerance is different. Every strain is different. So, it’s important to start small and keep a journal detailing your microdosing journey.

Keep track of the amount, method of consumption, strain, and reactions

Write down notes about your mood, appetite, pain, sleep habits, clarity, whatever seems relevant to achieving the effect you are looking for. This will help you find the perfect balance for your particular body and metabolism.

How to Start MicroDosing

So, how do you ensure the right dosage? Is one method of consumption better than the other? Well, it is certainly easier to ensure the right dosage with edibles than any other method, but it really boils down to your personal preference. Once you’ve decided on a method, and a strain for that matter, it should remain consistent. Otherwise, you’ll find it difficult to narrow down your sweet spot since the effects can vary based on these factors. You’ll also want to tailor your consumption method for microdosing. Since one hit out of a normal bowl or a joint can contain up to 10 milligrams of THC, if you decide to smoke as your means of consumption, you’ll want to invest in a small mini hitter pipe to meter the dosage more accurately. If you choose to vape, you will want to take advantage of disposable vape pens or utilize the lower temperature settings on other vape equipment. The idea here is not to induce a high, but to take it in moderation.

Personally, I prefer edibles for microdosing. Edibles are easy, discreet, and consistent- making them perfect for everyday use. These are my favorite microdosing products. You’ll notice a lot of them are mints and that’s for good reason! Mints are discreet, portable, and make your breath smell wonderful. Of course, I find these lil chocolate bites to be perfect for an after dinner treat.

KIVA Petra Mints

Cannabis microdosingThese delicious mints combine matcha tea and mint to create a subtle, yet delicious mint with a completely customizable dose.

With 2.5mg per piece, you can use as few or as many as you need to reach your ideal THC level

My personal favorite is the Moroccan Mint because of it’s light vanilla flavor but the Eucalyptus is wonderful is you need something with a little stronger mint flavor.

Breez Mints

I am a huge fan of the Cinnamon CBD version of these mints. They taste great and provide the perfect balance of CBD and THC in a 1:1 5mg ratio. Of course, these beauties also come in a THC version as well in doses of 5mg per mint in an original mint flavor and also 20mg per mint in the royal mint flavor- think vanilla mint! Personally, I prefer to use the CBD version for microdosing during the daytime and reserve the 20mg mints to help fight insomnia at night.

Stoke’s Micros

cannabis microdosingIf you’d like a wider variety of flavors and the ability to specify your preferred strain (indica v. sativa v. hybrid), this is the edible for you! Available in a Honey Lemon Ginger (indica),a Tangerine Cream (hybrid), Watermelon (hybrid), and Mint (sativa), this product has the most variety by far. Not only do these little tabs come in several handy flavors and strains, but at just 5mg THC per tab, they are conveniently dosed. They are also discreetly packaged, making them portable and convenient.

KIVA Terra Bites

Terra Bites come in two varieties depending on your flavor preferences and caffeine sensitivity. For those of us carrying on a love affair with dark chocolate and coffee, there is the espresso bean variety and for those of us flirting with all things milk chocolate and fruit, there is the blueberry and milk chocolate flavor.

Each has 5mg of THC per bite and come in these adorable tins that you can reuse in a myriad of new ways!

Remember, when microdosing with edibles, it’s important to start small. I recommend starting with 1-2 milligrams and working your way up until you find the right balance for you. You’ll also want to remember that edibles can take anywhere from 45 min to 2 hours to kick in, depending on your metabolism. With this in mind, remember to wait before you writing a dose off as ineffective and taking more. Microdosing is about taking your time and finding the perfect dose for everyday use. So, don’t rush it.

You’ll know you’ve got it right whenever you begin to experience improved mood, less stress and anxiety, and increased productivity and focus. You’ve gone too far if you start to feel inebriated or disconnected. This can be a fine line depending on your tolerance level and it may take a lot of experimenting to find the perfect dose for your body, but don’t’ be afraid to experiment. After all, nobody has ever “overdosed” on marijuana!
