When you think movies and ganja, you probably envision Cheech and Chong, Bill and Ted, Jay and Silent Bob, or any number of other typical stoner films, filled with cheap laughs and a guaranteed good time. But stoner movies aren’t the only option for sensational stoned viewing.

Personally, I like to pair my weed with a mental rollercoaster, something that allows me to see new idiosyncrasies and subtly different nuances every time I light up. Of course, whether those nuances actually exist or are simply the product of my herbally enhanced creative mind, remains to be seen. Either way, here are some of my favorite ganja-laced movie experiences.

Mr. Nobody (2009) & Berry White

Do you remember the “Choose Your Own Adventure” books? This film is the embodiment of choice. It takes “what ifs” to a whole new level! As the film winds its way in and out of the potential paths of a life, you’ll find yourself questioning every new alternative existence with your own imaginative “what ifs.”

This film invites you to examine the many turning points in your own life with vigorous curiosity

So sit back and let Mary Jane take you down this rabbit hole of possibilities.

The Final Cut (2004) & Space Queen

movie night with weedThe Final Cut is one of Robin William’s lesser known films but, in my opinion, a must see. The Final Cut takes place in a world where people have been implanted with chips which record every moment of their lives from birth, from the mundane to the life altering, nothing is left unrecorded. The potential for corruption, the questions of privacy, and society’s intricate relationship with technology all make for some vivid ganja fueled considerations.

Alice In Wonderland (1951 and 2010) & LSD

Strangely enough, I’m going to recommend that you watch the animated version and the live action remake back to back for maximum enjoyment. “There is a place. Like no place on Earth. A land full of wonder, mystery, and danger! Some say to survive it: You need to be as mad as a hatter.” These films never fail to provide a visually entertaining and thought provoking sesh if you believe in impossible things.

Requiem for a Dream (2000) & Tangerine Dream

This film is a treat for the eyes, the ears, and the mind.  Its gritty and unpolished portrayal of addiction is both intriguing and brash. This isn’t an optimistic film.

It’s raw and unrelenting and will challenge you to explore every ounce of what it has to offer, no matter how unpalatable or provoking

While it may seem odd to pair cannabis with a movie about drug addiction, I find the harsh truths of the movie are a stark contrast to the healing and restorative power of cannabis.

American Beauty (1999) & Rosetta Stone

movie night with weedThe imagery and use of color in this movie to express deep, complex ideas really lends itself to a wide array of interpretation and this subjective mind trip is made all the better by a little ganja. If you’ve ever felt trapped in pursuit of the American dream or some ideal of life, this movie will awaken your will to fight back and control your destiny. Your herbal companion will just give you a plethora of ideas for battle!

The Girl On The Train (2016) & Trainwreck

I don’t know about you but I love a good plot twist, especially when that twist makes you question the entire premise of the movie. The Girl On The Train delivers just that and the twists and turns become even more vibrant with a little Mary Jane to light the way. This movie makes you question what a person is capable of and how our perception of the world can be manipulated so easily by outside forces.

Shutter Island (2010) & Island Sweet Skunk

There is no better term for this one than “total mind fuck!” This wild ride through this drama is made all the more wild with a little sweet leaf. You’ll be questioning your own reality by the end of the movie! The fine line between fantasy and reality is not only blurred in this film but, it  is totally obliterated only to be replaced by this spiral that winds its way in and out of perceptions only to leave you questioning the very nature of reality.

Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975) & Painkiller

Watching Rocky Horror Picture Show completely stoned is the next best thing to a live, interactive show! Not only does it present a fun ride for the mind, but it’s entertaining on a level beyond the surface. You get a fun balance of laughs and subtle mind stretching commentary.

Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind (2004) & Sunshine Daydream

I enjoy this one as an exercise for the romantic buried deep in my psyche. This film provides a subtle commentary about the value of relationships in our lives and the interdependence of all life. Debating the effects of partial lobotomy is only the beginning of the journey your medicated ind will enjoy throughout this story.

Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey (2014) & Space Queen

Okay, this is technically not a movie, but definitely ranks as one of my movie and weedfavorite cannabis infused viewing experiences. There is nothing more thought provoking than exploring the fundamental laws of nature whilst floating atop a fluffy green high. I can only describe this as an individual journey through time. The rest of the world melts away and you are suspended in this flowing journey through life itself.

And there you have it, eleven unexpected movies to enjoy during your next sesh that are guaranteed to move your mind and titillate the senses.

Bonus:

If you’re not up for a complete mind flip and simply want to let your mind float along a mind bending journey, you can always embrace a few classics:

Pink Floyd: The Wall (1982) and Yellow Submarine (1968)

You can’t go wrong with the classics!
